Volta Medical SAS reported validation for its VX1 software mapping system, an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm compatible with most commonly available multi-pole catheters and technology used in operating rooms and cath labs for treating cardiac arrhythmia. Medical science has been experimenting with smart devices for several years to determine whether these products can detect circulatory system diseases, and a study presented at the 2022 meeting of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC 2022) seems to strongly suggest that the answer is a resounding yes. The eBRAVE-AF study of more than 5,500 enrollees of middle age or older demonstrated the ability of a smartphone camera and a downloadable app to at beat conventional screening for atrial fibrillation (AF), a finding that could save lives and boost the prospects of device makers in the digital health space.

AI software beats physician in test of interpretation of ultrasound for LVEF

There may be those who believe that artificial intelligence (AI) is suffering from overexposure in the media, but these software algorithms are nonetheless challenging medical professionals in their use of medical diagnostics. A new study showed that an AI algorithm not only bested the sonographer in interpretation of whether cardiac ultrasound was indicative of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), but also that the results were sufficiently vigorous that the reviewing cardiologist couldn’t distinguish between the sonographer’s interpretations and those provided by the algorithm.
