The University of Western Ontario and Renishaw Canada (Mississauga, Ontario) have joined forces to develop a prototype for hip replacement implants which promise to be structurally and electronically "smarter" than current implants. The university was one of the first in Canada to use Renishaw's additive manufacturing process to build medical devices and has now used it to create a 3-D-designed hip implant Renishaw additive manufacturing business manager Mark Kirby said is more akin to an iPhone than a prosthetic.
