Selux wins FDA breakthrough device designation for phenotyping platform

Selux Diagnostics Inc. has received breakthrough device designation from the FDA for its Next Generation Phenotyping (NGP) platform for positive blood culture and sterile body fluid samples. The NGP technology is a diagnostic platform designed to help with the delivery of personalized antimicrobial therapies within 24 hours. The Boston-based company is hoping the technology can tackle the global antibiotic resistance crisis. According to the World Health Organization, antimicrobial resistance is one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity.

My Next Health gathers $150M capital from private investment group

Precision medicine company My Next Health Inc. (MNH) has guaranteed a $150 million equity capital commitment from Global Emerging Market (GEM), a $3.4 billion Luxembourg-based private investment group. MNH was formed in May 2020 due to a merger between functional genomics company The DNA Company and digital therapeutics platform My Pain Sensei. The New York-based company is developing genomics-based health management applications that offer patients personalized genetic insights.

Analysts lower Boston Scientific sales forecast following concerns over impact of Delta variant

Boston Scientific Corp. has said pressure from the Delta variant in the U.S. means it is unlikely to hit the lower end of its current third-quarter sales guidance, which calls for 12% to14% organic growth vs. Q320 and 5% to 7% organic growth vs. Q319. Boston Scientific said it expected to still hit the full year sales guidance of 6% to 7% organic vs. 2019 that it issued on July 27 but would continue to monitor the economic and financial impacts of COVID-19. The company noted that the impact of Delta had been mostly in the NW and SE parts of the U.S. while the impact in EU/APAC region had been more modest.

The U.S. FDA has cleared Memed Diagnostics Ltd.'s blood test for distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections. The diagnostic test has been tipped as an essential step in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. While most infectious disease tests look for the pathogen, Memed BV is an advanced host immune response test that measures the levels of immune system proteins and applies proprietary algorithms to generate an immune signature.

Merck and Biocorp team up to develop device to monitor HGH treatment

Merck KGaA has signed an agreement with French company Biocorp SA to develop a version of its Mallya smart device for monitoring human growth hormone (HGH) treatment. Mallya is a clip-on device for pen injectors that collects the dose and time of each injection and transfers the information in real time to a companion software using Bluetooth technology. The device is CE marked (Class IIb) and was first launched in France in 2020.

Opgen’s multiplex diagnostic panel found to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use

A multicenter study has found that a multiplex diagnostic panel developed by Opgen Inc. can reduce the use of inappropriate antibiotic therapy by 45.1%. Opgen’s Unyvero Hospitalized Pneumonia (HPN) panel uses PCR technology that can detect 21 pathogens and 17 antibiotic resistance markers in less than five hours. During the European Respiratory Society conference, Rockville, Md.-based Opgen presented data showing that combined with antibiotic stewardship, its HPN panel decreased time on inappropriate antibiotic therapy in hospitalized patients with pneumonia at risk for Gram-negative rods.

Finnish companies combine to form IVD triple threat

Three is the magic number for Finnish companies Abacus Diagnostica Oy, Kaivogen Oy and Labrox Oy as they link up to develop a new diagnostic solution combining antibody and PCR testing on a single device. The three Turku, Finland-based companies said they are joining forces to form a new diagnostics powerhouse, harnessing their own unique expertise. Abacus Diagnostica develops molecular testing and rapid PCR tests while Kaivogen specializes in immunoassays and antibody tests and Labrox on laboratory instruments. All companies have previously collaborated on R&D projects.

Medial Earlysign partners with Roche Diagnostics for early cancer detection tools

Startup company Medial Earlysign Ltd. and Roche Diagnostics International Ltd. are teaming up to bring to market artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for early detection of cancer. Founded in 2013, Tel Aviv-based Medial Earlysign uses machine learning tools to flag patients with a high probability of developing specific illnesses. The partnership with Roche will initially focus on gastric cancer.
