Draper helps US military battle biothreats with organ-on-a-chip

The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Inc. has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to screen pathogens, toxins and diseases using its high-throughput organ-chip devices. As part of a concerted effort to develop new medical countermeasures against biological and chemical threats, organs-on-a-chip provide directly applicable insights into human responses and enable testing on organs developed from a diverse pool of live donors prior to human trials. FDA clears Insulet’s Omnipod 5 tubeless ‘artificial pancreas’ for children as young as 2

Insulet Corp. got the U.S. FDA’s nod to extend use of its Omnipod 5 automated insulin pump to children aged 2 years and up with type 1 diabetes. The expanded indication, just seven months after FDA cleared Omnipod 5 for patients 6 years and older, represents the first time a tubeless automated insulin delivery (AID) system has been authorized for use in children this young. German doctors reluctant to prescribe health apps

German regulators have unveiled their initial report covering the prescription and deployment of reimbursable health apps. The survey was carried out by Hamburg-based health insurance fund Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) in conjunction with Bielefeld University in North Rhine-Westphalia and health care economics analysis research bureau Vandage GmbH, also based in Bielefeld. Researchers create mid-gestation embryos from stem cells

Research over the past decade has shown embryonic stem cells can undergo many disparate aspects of mammalian embryogenesis in vitro. But without the support of extra-embryonic stem cells that go on to form the placenta and yolk sac, development stalls. Now, two groups of researchers, led by scientists at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and Cambridge University, U.K., have taken the in vitro development of whole mouse embryos further, by adding or inducing the differentiation of trophoblast cells and extra-embryonic endoderm stem cells.
