Chronic disease patients are facing serious risks both from keeping away from necessary care settings, as well as from potential COVID-19 infection. One in five chronic disease patients was already starting to avoid seeking care in physician’s offices and hospitals, according to a survey that started early last week of a panel of 1,300 chronic disease patients across several indications.
The Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) and CMS both posted their final rules for electronic health records (EHRs), and analysts with Cowen Washington Research Group said both rules essentially replicate the draft versions. The Senate passed by a vote of 96-1 the spending bill for the outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), which will be on President Donald Trump’s desk by week’s end. Stanford University School of Medicine and Apple Inc.have published results from the largest digital-only study. The trial has been conducted in more than 400,000 people in the U.S. over more than eight months. It was set up to screen participants via their Apple Watch for heart irregularities and then to further monitor any of those with identified issues with a wearable ECG patch.

CLEVELAND – Monday featured a big announcement during the 2019 Medical Innovation Summit, with the Cleveland Clinic and American Well revealing that they are partnering to create a joint venture (JV) focused on telehealth. The venture, dubbed The Clinic for now, was conceived "in order to achieve our joint vision and our ambitions in how to revise the delivery of care and to be at the forefront of it," said Semih Sen, chief business development officer, Cleveland Clinic, as part of a keynote delivered by Roy Schoenberg, president and CEO of Boston-based American Well.
Roughly 10% of newborns require some form of assistance at birth, and 1% need major resuscitative efforts. The time to help one of these babies can be measured in minutes, so having the right specialist on hand can have a huge impact on the child's outcome. Six-and-a-half years ago, the Mayo Clinic launched the Newborn Resuscitation Telemedicine Program (NRTP) to offer telemedicine consults to community hospitals within its health system during high-risk neonatal resuscitations. The program has been successful in reducing unnecessary transfers and growing the number of patient referrals to Mayo Clinic.
Telehealth and telemedicine have been slow to catch on for a number of reasons, but the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed a pilot program to increase the use of telemedicine for low-income Americans and military veterans. While access to broadband services is still an issue for many, the so-called Connected Care Pilot drew support from a range of stakeholders, who argued that telehealth is critical to managing public health crises, such as diabetes and the opioid epidemic.
